I live in the Don Gorge and draw my inspiration from the surrounding countryside which is very beautiful. Sprotbrough Flash nature reserve is close by with a large lake and woodland. Birds and wildlife abound, wild flowers in spring and summer, and stunning views all the year round make this a wonderful place to work. The seasons and weather also influence my paintings. I love the muted colours of winter when frost and snow bring a magical quality to the scenery; the 'in your face' colours of autumn and the fresh greens of spring - and always the light and reflections on water.
The area is steeped in history, the Pilgrim Fathers, who sailed to America in the Mayflower, came from villages just south of Doncaster. Sherwood forest of Robin Hood legend , stretched from south of Nottingham to north of Wakefield. The Major Oak, a huge and ancient tree which appears in the legend, still stands in Sherwood Forest. Conisborough Castle which features in the novel 'Ivanhoe' by Sir Walter Scott, is five minutes by road or thirty by water. The Trans-Pennine Trail, which crosses England, linking the Irish and North Seas, passes on the towpath between the River Don and Sprotbrough Flash right by my door and can be seen on Google Earth.
Sprotbro'Painter is the narrow-boat which I used as a gallery from 1989-2002 and gave rise to the name I have come to be recognised by.
My work has been published in The Artist, Yorkshire Life, Yorkshire Post, Waterways World, Canal and Riverboat, The Leisure Painter, and in local newspapers in Sheffield, Rotherham and Doncaster.
I work in oils, watercolour, gouache and acrylic - suiting the medium to the subject of the painting and exhibit locally several times a year. I also undertake private commissions.
