Fishing the River Don

Winter Fishing at Sprotbrough Bridge.  This painting is of two fishermen on the  Warmsworth side of the River Don on a very wintry day. They have competition from the herons fishing in the area between the falls and the bridge.

Winter Fishing at Sprotbrough Bridge

By  the second half of the 20th century the River Don was one of the most polluted rivers in Europe. The water contained non- biodegradable detergents which caused a brown foam to form as water tumbled over falls and weirs on it's way to the sea. Even a slight breeze would lift clouds of foam into the air which would float for hundreds of yards above the water.

Water quality improvements were started in 1974 by the Yorkshire Water Authority and by the late 1980's returning fish populations attracted anglers back to fishingthe River Don.  According to the Environment Agency salmon are beginning  to return to the river, an 11 lb Salmon was caught below Sprotbrough Falls  in August 2006.

A fish pass, to enable fish to travel beyond Sprotbrough Falls to spawn, is currently being explored by the Don Gorge Strategic Partnership. This will encourage  a  sustainable food chain which will in turn support other kinds of wildlife.
